Adrian Matejka

Indiana Poet Laureate

Message from Adrian

I am so honored to be the sixth Poet Laurate for the state of Indiana. I hope that I’ll be able to continue the traditions of poetic celebration and outreach established by our previous Poets Laureate while also bringing some new community initiatives to the position. In the coming months, we’ll be unveiling a monthly workshop series (in the tradition of the great Indianapolis poet Etheridge Knight) as well as public archive of Indiana poetry. The archive will collect poetry from all poets with connections to Indiana and is meant to be both a resource for and testament to the great diversity of Indiana poetry.

Poetry is our most essential public art and there is room in it for everyone and it is my hope that during the next two years, we’ll get poems into places in Indiana places where poem my not have been previously available. That’s one of the great gifts of poetry—it’s inexpensive to make, portable, and available to anyone with an interest in creative language.
